Due to their size, exodontia in large wildlife species can be difficult. This presentation discusses the use of an electo-mechanical device, the PowertomeTM Periotome to sever the periodontal ligament and make exodontia easier.
Anesthesia was induced via injection and maintained via gas anesthesia through a cuffed tube. Intraoral radiographs were taken which showed that the left maxillary canine tooth was dead. A gingival releasing flap on the mesialbuccal and distalbuccal line angles of the tooth was created. The Powertome® Periotome was used to separate the periodontal ligament and the tooth was elevated. After cleaning out the tooth alveolus, the flap was closed with 2-0 Monocryl, in a combination of simple interrupted and interlocking continuous sutures.
Recovery was uneventful and the surgical wound healed without complication.
