Background

Mechanical and surgical heartworm removal is indicated in severe cases of heartworm infestation because adulticidal therapy may cause acute death due to pulmonary embolism. To avoid this problem removing a large number of worms with flexible alligator forceps prior to subsequent adulticidal therapy is recommended.

Aims

To develop a new percutaneous removal method of heartworm in severe case of heartworm infestation.

Methods

We developed a new percutaneous removal method of heartworm using Flexer® Tuohy-Borst Side-Arm Introducer and endoscopic retrieval devices.

Results

We successfully applied this new method to 4 dogs with severe heartworm infestation. Subsequent follow-up studies found that this method is safer and more efficient than previous methods.

Conclusion

The new percutaneous heart worm removal method was a good alternative for severe heartworm infestation.
