RADIOGRAPHIC EVALUATION OF GROWTH PLATE CLOSURE TIMES IN THE ANTEBRACHIUM OF KANGAL PUPPIES
Objective: To determine the growth plate closure times in the antebrachium of Kangal puppies via clinical and radiological examination. 125 radiographs were evaluated in a total of 55 puppies (31 males and 24 females) aged between 2-13 months.
Conclusions: Analysis of the radiological measurements, showed that the proximal ulna growth plate closed in a mean of 8.1 months and that the distal ulna growth plate and the proximal and distal growth plates of the radius closed at a mean of 11 months.. The closure of the apophysis of the ulna was early and that the closure of the other 3 growth plates were simultaneous but late. Gender affected timing. Closure times were usually symmetrically in both legs. The growth plate of the anconeal process closed in 113-146 days. There were no cases of ununited anconeal process. These findings support breed-specific studies. Information from these studies could improve diagnosis and treatment of orthopaedic problems associated with early or late closure of growth plates.
