Small Animal Drug Formulary, 2nd Ed.
You can never get enough drugs (resources) :) !

This second edition of the formulary appears only online in the VIN Library and is compiled from Appendix IV of the 5th edition of the Handbook of Small Animal Practice (HSAP), which was edited by VIN consultant Rhea V. Morgan DVM, DACVIM, DACVO.

Hundreds of drugs are listed in alphabetical order by generic name and are cross referenced to the corresponding brand name so you can search by either one.

The handbook lists one or more usages for each drug, followed by the recommended drug dosage for that particular condition and can be found in the Drug Resources section of the VIN library.

What’s Insemination Got To Do With It?
Did you know that cabbage leaves could be used for mastitis? Are you in a quandary as to which drugs are safe to use during pregnancy or lactation? Do you understand how progesterone and LH measurements can be used for timing insemination? How about the differences between chilled and frozen semen?

Find answers to these and other questions pertaining to reproduction, genetics and neonatology in the Reproduction & Genetics Specialty Center.

Browse the sections on reproductive techniques and diseases, neonatal care and client handouts. Handy links are provided to related journals, proceedings, websites and rounds. In addition, images, slideshows and videos are available for your perusal.

The Reproduction & Genetics Specialty Center can be reached through the About Page of the Reproduction message folder and the Specialty Centers section of the VIN Library.

Carriage of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus by veterinarians in Australia
Veterinarians with horses as a major area of work emphasis had a prevalence of 11.8% (13-fold that of controls) and those whose only major emphasis was horses had a prevalence of 21.4% (23-fold that of controls). Veterinarians with dogs and cats as a major activity had a 4.9% prevalence (5-fold that of controls).

Serum protein electrophoresis in 147 dogs
The most common DAMNITV classification associated with abnormal serum protein electrophoresis results was infectious / inflammatory disease, which was diagnosed in 79 of 140 cases (56.4 per cent). Monoclonal gammopathies were noted in eight dogs (5.7 per cent), and underlying lymphoproliferative disease was present in all cases where a diagnosis was achieved, including multiple myeloma (four dogs), splenic plasmacytoma (one dog), hepatic plasmacytoma (one dog), and lymphoma (one dog).

Effect of induction dose, lactation stage and body condition on tiletamine-zolazepam
No effect of condition index (CI) on induction or recovery time was demonstrated. Respiratory rate decreased during induction and increased significantly during surgical biopsy of blubber. Minor complications (tremor, vocalisation, and mild dyspnoea) were observed in a small number of cases, none of which required treatment.

Resistant pseudomonas urinary tract infection in chronic renal failure cat: Is treatment necessary?
I have a 17-year-old MN DSH with stable renal failure. The cat presented for workup on 10-14-10 and a UTI with rods was found on UA. Treated cat with Clavamox for 3 weeks. Did a urine culture after off antibiotics for 2 weeks and grew pseudomonas aeruginosa resistent to all antibiotics except Zeniquin. Amikacin, and Ticaricillin. Treated cat with Zeniquin for 3 weeks and did another urine culture recently and still growing same pseudomonas - now resistent to all antibiotics except Amikacin, Cefoperazone (can't find dose for cats), Ceftriaxone (rec lower dose with renal diseae), Imipenem (contraindicated with renal disease), and Timentin (Plumbs says pets with renal disease may develop plt abnormalities or CNS effects).

Pinnal, interdigital, and footpad ulcers in dog with idiopathic vasculitis
Most of the vasculitis I have seen is idiopathic. Hard to know how long therapy will be needed but glad to hear she is doing better. I would do a very slow taper on your steroids and keep her on maintenance for several months.

Differentials for a snapping turtle that has severe subcutaneous emphysema (photographs)
I just saw a common snapping turtle at the wildlife center who is very swollen with air in the front and back limbs and around the neck. He feels like a beach ball with audible ping and an FNA revealed that it was air. I just saw him today but he has been at the center since May of 2010 looking like this. Any ideas?
