Why they are what they are

On occasion we receive questions from readers – veterinarians, breeders, and pet owners – regarding the purpose of some of VetzInsight articles or why we allow or don’t allow certain comments to be posted.

First, some history. VetzInsight is an arm of the Veterinary Information Network (VIN), an online community for veterinarians. While VIN is a closed community, limited to subscribing veterinarians, VetzInsight is a public access client education blog. For many years, VIN has hosted a client education site called Veterinary Partner that contains myriad articles designed to better help animal owners understand their pets’ conditions or diseases. The information at Veterinary Partner is excellent, fact-based and non-biased, but speaks to the brain of pet ownership rather than the heart.

Back in 2011, the editor of Veterinary Partner and several VIN staff veterinarians began to see a need for a slightly different but complementary information source. The goal with VetzInsight is to facilitate understanding between veterinarians, clients and all who have animals in their lives, including trainers and breeders. Understanding each other goes a long way towards creating a bridge between veterinarians and clients.

In order to maintain a sense of community, VetzInsight comments are moderated and posted manually; people are not allowed to simply post inappropriate comments. The comments policy for VetzInsight bans profanity, commercialism, and personal attacks. However, we do post comments that most of the veterinary community disagrees with, even when they cause us discomfort. Often one or more of the VetzInsight veterinarians will respond to those comments with further facts and information. Most of us who have authored VetzInsight articles have received comments from readers disagreeing with or challenging our articles. We have learned something from each and every one of them.

Ultimately, VetzInsight's mission is to present veterinary issues in an often light-hearted way, sso that readers, even those who are veterinarians, get an idea of what transpires in the hearts and minds of veterinarians.

VIN News Service commentaries are opinion pieces presenting insights, personal experiences and/or perspectives on topical issues by members of the veterinary community. To submit a commentary for consideration, email news@vin.com.

Information and opinions expressed in letters to the editor are those of the author and are independent of the VIN News Service. Letters may be edited for style. We do not verify their content for accuracy.
