Identification of the Canine Parvovirus Strains from Feces of Diarrhea Dogs in Jeju and Seoul
Canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2) emerged as causative agent of severe hemorrhagic gastroenteritis in dogs in 1978. A few years after its emergence, 2 new antigenic types, CPV-2a and CPV-2b have rapidly spread all over the world, whereas the original type 2 (CPV-2) is no longer found in the dog population. Despite vaccination, CPV-2 remains an important cause of disease and is often implicated in fatal infection in young puppies. We examined the canine parvovirus type in Jeju and Seoul area. Forty nine samples that were positive by CPV diagnostic kit in Jeju and Seoul were used in this study. The antigenic type of CPV samples was characterized, using four discriminating primer (CPV-2, CPV-2a, CPV-2b) pairs. In PCR assay, 46 of them (93.9%) were positive by CPV specific primer. Thirty three of them were typed as CPV-2b (71.7%) and 13 were typed as CPV-2a (28.3%), and in this new isolated CPV2b-Jeju3 (98%) and CPV2b-Jeju4 (99%) were similarity to CPV2b-Japan and CPV-407, 436(USA) on the VP2 region of CPV. In this survey, we know that the strain of CPV in Jeju and Seoul area is almost CPV-2a and CPV-2b as like other countries. Some vaccine strain is still CPV old or 2 type, so we should consider the new vaccine strain for the higher antigenicity and antibody titer.
