Scorpion sting is a hazardous and potentially lethal condition. In Iran severe complications are known from the sting of Hemiscorpius lepturus in animals and man. Severe hemolysis, renal failure, necrotic ulcers, psychological problems and death are reported complications.
Experiment was carried out by injecting H. lepturus scorpion venom (collected from the khouzestan province, Iran ) in male rats. The different sub lethal doses of the venom (20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 micrograms/kg) were injected subcutaneously in 6 group of rats (Each group containing 10 mature male rats). The control group was injected with normal saline. Blood samples were taken to measure the levels of serum enzymes include AST, ALT, ALP, CPK and LDH in different times (0, 30 and 60, min ), (3 and 12 hrs ), (2 , 3 and 7 days) after envenoming.
Our results showed that there was a significant increase in the circulating levels of all measured serum enzymes following envenoming in comparison with control group (p<0.5). There was a significant positive correlation between the concentration of the venom and elevation of all serum enzymes in different groups of rats.
These alteration showed that the serum enzymes are elevated because of the necrotic effects of H. lepturus scorpion venom in different tissues specially in liver and blood.
