Course Information:
Do you know what COHAT stands for? If not, this webinar is for you! Denise Rollings, CVT, VTS (Dentistry) will explain the Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment (COHAT). The dental indices, how to use a periodontal probe, what to document, and aftercare are discussed.

  • Perform supra- and subgingival scaling/curettage
  • Determine what treatment options are best suited for the patient
  • Discuss aftercare instructions with the pet parent

Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session November 12): What's a Dental?
This week will discuss the proper terminology used in veterinary dentistry to help convey the importance to the pet parent. A refresher of anatomy and terminology, steps before the procedure, and the beginning of the COHAT are covered.

Week 2 (Real Time Session November 19): Steps of a COHAT
A dental procedure is more than just cleaning teeth. We are looking for more than just periodontal pockets to determine if a patient has periodontal disease. Learn how to differentiate between the different hand instruments and how to use them properly. The potential treatment options for periodontal disease are explained.

Week 3 (Real Time Session November 26): After the COHAT
The finishing steps of a COHAT are explained. Follow-up is an important part of maintaining a healthy mouth, and it's important to be able to discuss that with the pet parent. Home dental care is explained so the information can be conveyed to the pet parent. We want to maintain a healthy mouth and prevent disease from worsening. Hand dental instrument maintenance is important to have the safest, most effective instruments, and that includes sharpening.

Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. To learn more about the requirements for earning a CE certificate, please refer to Receiving Your CE Credit and Course Completion Certificate.
