Level and Prerequisites:
This
intermediate course places an emphasis on the anatomy and physiology of the different systems and how nutrition can help manage the specific disease process. An understanding of anatomy and physiology is highly recommended.

Course Description:
Therapeutic nutrition is not a new idea! However, it is an essential component of our treatment plans that is often underutilized. Technicians and support staff often play a starring role in the most successful nutrition programs in clinic when they understand the needs of their clients and patients. This course will build on a strong foundation of basic nutrition knowledge required to best feed healthy patients. In this course, we will explore the most common diseases encountered in general practice and how best to provide nutritional intervention and management. For each disease, we will explore the Key Nutritional Factors (KNFs) that have been developed to best manage the studied disease. Support staff will be provided with tools and skills to better allow for team support, client education and patient care and nutritional management
Week 1 (Real Time Session August 7):
Why Food? Understanding the Need for Therapeutic Nutrition and Your Role
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Describe and identify Key Nutritional Factors and their role in diet selection
- Take a basic and detailed nutrition history
- Perform a diet calculation: DER, RER and feeding amounts
- Lead a nutrition consultation with a client
- Follow up with clients
- Manage complex cases
Week 2 (Real Time Session August 14):
Fido and Fifi�s Fitness: Nutritional Management of Obesity and Mobility
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Determine ideal body weight of obese and overweight patients
- Utilize available tools in clinic
- Identify KNFs for management of obesity and mobility
- Calculate energy needs for weight loss, maintenance and obesity prevention
Week 3 (Real Time Session August 21):
A Gut Feeling: Nutritional Management of Gastrointestinal,
Diabetes, Liver, Renal and Lower Urinary Tract Disease (LUTD) Diseases
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Identify nutritional risk factors that predispose patients to disease
- Discuss variations within disease types and stages
- Discuss physiology of each disease
- Develop a nutritional plan for management of each disease
Week 4 (Real Time Session August 28):
It�s Complicated: Adverse Reactions, Brain Aging, Cardiovascular, Recovery and Neoplasic Disease
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Discuss physiology of each disease
- Identify KNFs for each disease
- Discuss the role nutrition plays in management of disease
- Discuss variations within disease types and stages
- Develop a nutritional plan for each disease
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Presenter:
Kara M. Burns, MS, MEd, LVT, VTS (Nutrition) is the Founder and President of the Academy of Veterinary Nutrition Technicians (AVNT). As an LVT with two master's degrees - physiology and counseling psychology she lectures internationally and has authored many articles and textbook chapters on nutrition. Kara sits on many national boards and committees. She was recognized as the NAVTA 2010 Veterinary Technician of the Year and was the 2011 Dr. Franklin Loew Lecturer. She was awarded an honorary VTS by the Academy of Internal Medicine Veterinary Technicians and the Academy of Veterinary Dental Technicians.
