Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience

Level and Prerequisites:
This
intermediate course will be open to veterinary technicians/technologists actively interested in small animal anesthesia.

Course Description:
This course will give the participants an opportunity to critically think about how and why anesthetic drug protocols are chosen for a particular canine or feline patient. Each session will use a mix of audio, video, and images to present various real-life clinical anesthetic case scenarios. The speaker will lead the participants through the case presenting different variables such as presentation, history, vital signs, blood work, etc. The participants will then be asked to select the best protocol for each case and what type of monitoring equipment would be ideal for each case.
Week 1 (Real Time Session November 13):
Canine Anesthesia Case Presentations
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Evaluate canine anesthetic candidates on presentation and history
- Participate in selecting a proper anesthesia plan for the patient from pre-medication through post-operative care
- Select what monitoring equipment would be ideal for each case
- Examine and discuss techniques including CRIs, local and epidural blocks
Week 2 (Real Time Session November 20):
Feline Anesthesia Case Presentations
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Evaluate feline anesthetic candidates on presentation and history
- Participate in selecting a proper anesthesia plan for the patient from pre-medication through post-operative care
- Select what monitoring equipment would be ideal for each case
- Examine and discuss techniques including CRIs, local and epidural blocks
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.
*The lecture portion of this course will use both text and audio presentation, please be prepared to listen.

About the Instructor:
Jody Nugent-Deal, RVT, VTS has worked for the University of California-Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital since 1999, working in the companion exotics department for 10 years and currently the small animal anesthesia department where she is the supervisor. Ms. Nugent-Deal is a founding member of the Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Clinical Practice and is the executive secretary for the group as well as the appeals committee chair. Jody is an active member with the Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Anesthesia and Analgesia having served on the nominations, credentials and appeals committees. Jody is currently a Member At Large for the AVTAA. Jody also serves on the board for CaRVTA. Ms. Nugent-Deal has lectured throughout North America since 2000 on anesthesia and various exotic animal topics. Jody has published numerous articles and book chapters for both canine/feline and exotic animal medicine and anesthesia topics. Jody is an instructor for both VSPN and VetMedTeam and she has a special interest in anesthesia, analgesia, pain management and critical care in exotics and dogs and cats. In Jody�s spare time, she loves to read, visit the ocean, run, road and mountain bike.

- Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to
VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course
must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a
