Level and Prerequisites:
This
intermediate course is geared toward veterinary technicians that deal with feline respiratory diseases or work in a feline centered practice. Participants should have knowledge of basic physiology with an emphasis on feline physiology.

Course Description:
This feline respiratory emergencies course is going to breakdown respiratory pathology in a way that can be understood to help demystify this body system. The specific diseases that can cause a patient to be in respiratory distress to proper handling and obtaining diagnostics in this type of patient will be reviewed. And finally, applying the information given to a fun, case based, interactive session will conclude this course.
Week 1 (Real Time Session February 14):
Respiratory Physiology
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Understand and discuss the pathology of the respiratory system
- Understand and discuss each component of the respiratory system
Week 2 (Real Time Session February 21):
Diseases Causing Respiratory Emergencies
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Understand basic pathophysiology of diseases that can cause respiratory emergencies
- Know diagnostics a licensed veterinarian may order and treatment options the veterinarian may prescribe for the diseases that can cause respiratory emergencies
Week 3 (Real Time Session February 28):
Feline Respiratory Emergencies in the Clinic
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Describe nursing care for the feline patient in a respiratory crisis
- Know how to properly handle and go forward with diagnostics and treatments prescribed by a licensed veterinarian for respiratory patients
- Know what the risk factors are with a patient in this type of crisis
Week 4 (Real Time Session March 7):
Feline Respiratory Emergency Cases
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Use the information provided in previous weeks to engage in this interactive case based discussion
- Apply the knowledge given throughout the entire class to be a better patient advocate for the feline patient in a respiratory crisis
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Instructor:
Paula Plummer, LVT, VTS (ECC, SAIM) has been at Texas A&M University since 2007, first working in the Small Animal ICU and then moving to the Feline Internal Medicine service in 2011. She graduated from Murray State College in Tishomingo, OK and has been a registered veterinary technician since 2000. In 2011 she received her veterinary technician specialty in emergency and critical care and in 2014 she received her second VTS in small animal internal medicine. Paula has spent most of her career in academia working in the critical care unit or feline internal medicine teaching veterinary students tasks that will help them be a better patient advocates when they graduate. Paula is also involved in teaching technicians in online programs and being a guest lecturer and lab instructor at local, regional and national continuing education symposiums.

- Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to
VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course
must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a
