Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience
in your CE course, we request you attend a Practice Session prior to the first
Real Time Session. Please arrive promptly at the start time; each Practice Session
is up to 1 hour in length.

Level and Prerequisites:
This
basic course is designed for veterinary technicians or assistants that have recently entered the field and would like to advance their knowledge of intensive care unit protocols and monitoring.
VSPN CE Course: Open to veterinary technicians/technologists and support staff.
This course has been RACE approved for veterinary technicians/technologists.(22-29883)
Course Description:
The intensive care unit is the core of most veterinary hospitals. This course will help give you the knowledge to be able to manage your cases well. We will start with infection control by learning how to protect yourself and patients with suggested protocols for the hospitalized patient. We will present a logical approach to patient assessment and nursing care. This course will also bring you up to date with the current recommendations for performing CPR. Medical math will be covered, including calculating drug dosages, constant rate infusions, and nutritional requirements. This course will also discuss shift work and some methods to prevent compassion fatigue and burnout to benefit both you and your patients.
Week 1 (Real Time Session August 15):
Protecting the Patient and the Team
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Recognize the importance of maintaining appropriate measures to control and prevent hospital acquired infections
- Recognize the need for routine practices, risk reduction, and risk assessment of animals and personnel with regard to disease transmission and disease susceptibility
Week 2 (Real Time Session August 22):
Patient Assessment and CPR
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Understand the basics of how to triage a patient in an emergency situation
- Utilize the new techniques and standards for CPR based on standards utilized in the RECOVER Initiative
Week 3 (Real Time Session August 29):
Understanding Medical Math
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Demonstrate proficiency in reading drug labels
- Understand how to accurately calculate drug dosages, constant rate infusions, intravenous fluid needs for daily maintenance and volume replacement, and nutritional needs
Week 4 (Real Time Session September 5):
Taking Care of the Caregiver
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Recognize both compassion fatigue and burn out in themselves and team mates
- Identify how to prevent compassion fatigue and burn out
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Presenter:
Paula Plummer, LVT, VTS (ECC, SAIM) has been in the veterinary field for almost 20 years in academia and small animal private practice. Paula attained her VTS (ECC) in 2011, her VTS (SAIM) in 2014 and is one of the organizing committee members for the new AVTCP-Feline specialty. She currently works at Texas A & M University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital in the Feline Internal Medicine Department. She has worked most of her career in emergency and critical care medicine and feline internal medicine. She teaches a variety of skill labs to veterinary students and technicians and has lectured at local, regional and nation continuing education conferences and online CE courses on internal medicine, emergency and critical care topics.

- Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to
VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course
must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a
VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
