Level and Prerequisites:
This
basic course designed to provide an overview of the use of canine and feline vaccines. Vaccination science, protocols, and a brief overview of the vaccinated conditions will be covered. The course will provide a good understanding of how, when, and why vaccines are used in small animal practice.

Course Description:
Preventive care is a very important part of both veterinary and human medicine. Vaccines serve to help prevent a number of different diseases, some of which have no known treatment. It is important for veterinary technicians, receptionists, assistants, and other support staff to be comfortable with the use of vaccines, the education of the client, and/or vaccine administration. This course is designed to serve as a basic overview of the science behind vaccination, the different types of vaccines, the rationale behind vaccine timing, and possible adverse reactions. There will also be a brief discussion on the conditions we vaccinate against.
Week 1 (Real Time Session June 13):
Vaccine Science and Canine Vaccination Guidelines
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Describe how vaccines work and how the body responds to them
- Understand the different types of vaccines and the concept of a core vs. non-core vaccine
- Discuss the basics of each canine disease the vaccines are intended
Week 2 (Real Time Session June 20):
Feline Vaccination Guidelines and Vaccine Adverse Reactions
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Discuss core vs. non-core vaccines in the cat
- Understand the basics of each feline disease the vaccines are intended to prevent
- Explain common and uncommon adverse reactions to vaccines in the canine and feline patient
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Instructor:
Thomas Hansen, DVM, DABVP (Canine and Feline Practice) is a graduate of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Canine and Feline Practice). Outside of his work as an emergency clinician in San Francisco he is a VIN Feline Medicine consultant and a VIN/VSPN CE instructor
