Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course, we request you attend a Practice Session prior to the first Real Time Session. Level and Prerequisites: This basic course will be open to veterinary technicians/technologists and support staff actively interested in small mammal handling and restraint.
VSPN CE Course: Open to veterinary technicians/technologists and support staff. This course is approved by RACE for veterinary technicians/technologists. (RACE program #22-13603).

Course Description:
Proper restraint and handling of pets that come into the veterinary practice is extremely important to the safety of both veterinary staff and the animals that we see. In addition, veterinary staff positions outside the traditional veterinary practice require the knowledge and adaptability to handle a variety of animals. Safety is the number one concern for both the staff member and for the animal; proper handling is essential. We will also cover a variety of handling and restraint techniques for each common domestic species. This course is designed to give information that will be helpful to both veterinary assistants and veterinary technicians. It is hoped that in both the message boards and Real Time Sessions, participants will be able to share some of their experiences, as well as pick up helpful techniques and information.

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Instructors:
Shelley Shopsowitz, RVT, BA graduated from Seneca College�s Animal Health Technology program. Prior to attending Seneca College, Shelley earned a Bachelor�s Degree of Arts in Spanish (with honors) from University of Toronto. She has completed several advanced education courses in equine medicine through the University of Guelph, Michigan State University and University of Edinburgh. Shelley has worked with both large and small animals over the past sixteen years and has taught over 45 RACE approved continual education courses for VSPN in topics that include dermatology, parasitology, equine nutrition and behavior, small mammal handling and restraint and the VTNE Review.

* Students currently enrolled in and taking at least 2 classes or 5 units at an AVMA accredited or CAAHT approved Veterinary Technician Program may be eligible to receive a 50% discount off the regular rate for this course (upon verification of student status).

  1. Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
  2. Each enrollee must be able to receive emails from @vspn.org and @vin.com addresses. Email is our major form of communication with participants; personal emails are highly recommended rather than clinic/hospital email addresses.
  3. Each person is individually responsible for his/her own registration. To ensure that all information received is secure and correct, please do not enroll for a course on behalf of another individual.

*Note: "This program (22-13603) has been submitted for approval by AAVSB RACE to offer a total of 4.5 CE Credits, with a maximum of 4.5 CE Credits being available to any individual veterinary technician/technologist. This RACE approval is for the subject matter categories of: Scientific, the delivery method of Interactive-Distance: (Web-based, Teleconference or Audio-Conference). This approval is valid in jurisdictions which recognize AAVSB RACE; however, participants are responsible for ascertaining each board�s CE requirements.�
