Level and Prerequisites:
This
intermediate course includes a brief review of the fundamentals of arithmetic leading to interactive study of calculations frequently performed by veterinary technicians and assistants in veterinary practice. Participants should have a good grasp of fundamental concepts and successful completion of a high school or college algebra class is strongly recommended.

Course Description:
This six-hour skills development course reviews the fundamentals of math and is designed to help students learn to work through the types of calculations frequently performed by veterinary technicians and assistants in veterinary practice. There will be a review of basic math concepts and an introduction to the formulas and skills necessary to solve drug and fluid dosage problems.
Week 1 (Real Time Session September 7):
Math Assessment and Review of Decimal Numbers, Fractions, and Percentages
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Employ techniques to reduce math anxiety
- Interpret word problems and translate into math language
- Estimate answers to math problems
- Work with numbers in decimal, fraction, and percentage forms
Week 2 (Real Time Session September 14):
Solving for "X" and Systems of Measurement
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Use metric system units and perform metric conversions
- Use U.S. customary units and perform conversions
- Convert between metric and U.S. customary units
- Set up problems using ratio & proportion format
Week 3 (Real Time Session September 21):
Dosage Calculations
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Determine oral and parenteral drug doses based on weight and body surface area
- Calculate quantities of medication for patients based on dose and drug label
- Measure liquid volumes of medication
Week 4 (Real Time Session September 28):
IV Fluid Calculations
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Determine fluid dosages (for maintenance, replacement, anesthesia, and shock)
- Calculate fluid drip rates and infusion rates
- Calculate volumes for common fluid additives
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Instructor:
Elizabeth Warren, LVT has been a credentialed veterinary technician in Texas since 1995, first as an RVT and currently as an LVT, and a community college instructor since 1999. She teaches the following courses at Austin Community College in the veterinary assistant certificate program which she co-developed in 1999: Veterinary Pharmacology, Pharmacological Calculations, Nutrition, and Clinical Pathology; Canine and Feline Clinical Management and Veterinary Anesthesia and Surgical Assistance, and Introduction to Veterinary Technology. She also assisted with curriculum development for ACC's AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program in 2013. She has worked as an emergency veterinary technician part-time at the Emergency Animal Hospital of Northwest Austin since 2001, and as a volunteer moderator at the Veterinary Support Personnel Network since 2000.
Ms. Warren holds an AAS in veterinary technology from San Juan College and will graduate with a BA in Liberal Arts from Thomas Edison State University in September 2016. She is a contributing author to several publications, including The VSPN Notebook, Mosby's Comprehensive Review for Veterinary Technicians (pharmacology chapter), Tasks for the Veterinary Assistant (post-operative techniques chapter), Texas Veterinarian magazine, Veterinary Technician magazine, and Technically Speaking newsletter. She has contributed test items to the Texas RVT (TVMA) exam and the Veterinary Technician National Exam (AAVSB).

- Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to
VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course
must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a
VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
