This practice management course is part of a series of focus topics to highlight features of management in a single Real Time Session. Prior participation in the Practice Management 101 course is recommended, but not required. The course format is that of a VINgnette where interaction in the message boards discussing case scenarios will be required to enhance the single Real Time Session.
Participants should plan on this more intensive study.
VSPN CE Course: This course has been approved for veterinarians and veterinary technicians and has been submitted to VHMA for CVPM credits.
Course Description:
The "New Economy" has turned into the "Here to Stay Economy." So let's just call it the 2013 Economy. In the 1990's, veterinary hospitals typically grew 10-20% per annum! How much growth has your clinic experienced recently? Veterinary managers and owners are now tasked with actively tackling expenses, generating financial plans, projecting budget plans, and allowing teams to be a part of the solution. Imagine a clinic running like a well-oiled machine, working within its budget, being able to identify 'beans-in, beans-out,' and informing the team of the financial goal. Together we will review the importance of creating a hospital budget, its implementation and empowering the team to improve the bottom line.
This course consists of one (1) ninety (90) minute Real Time Session, supplemental library materials, interactive message board discussions, a mandatory end-of-course test, and may include online multiple choice quizzes (after each Real Time Session).
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.
*A portion of this course will be an audio presentation, please be prepared to listen.
Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to
- identify the pros of having and utilizing a budget.
- dissect your budget and chart of accounts.
- outline fixed and variable expenses.
- determine how to create and project a monthly budget for the upcoming year.
- develop and utilize a simple graph to chart monthly income and expenses.
- evaluate payroll expenses and their overall percentage of the budget.
- define inventory expenses and their overall percentage of the budget.
- create SMART goals to accomplish financial objectives.
- discuss with your team simple beans-in, beans-out of budgeting.

Course Outline:
Week 1: (Real Time Session January 16): Hospital Budgets
Content: The New Year is the prime time to project your budget for the upcoming year. Together, we will discuss the benefits of working within, creating, and implementing a budget. Participants will work through interactives that will require categorizing expenses, inputting hospital figures, identifying income centers, and detailing expenses. In the course message boards as well as the Real Time Session we will discuss trials and tribulations of budgeting allowing us to learn and converse about finances in a safe and comfortable setting. Discussing money is often a bit taboo; however, we will attempt to break through the crippling tradition and help you open up the dialog with your team, too. Finances can be a tough conversation. Let's use the budget as the great tool it is to help guide and direct your team up a hill of financial success and celebrate the victory when you all arrive at the top, together!
