Level and Prerequisites:
This
intermediate course is primarily for those who have the authority to set policy and to create and implement staff policy handbooks (office managers, practice administrators, supervisors and veterinarians); however, all members of the veterinary staff may benefit from the course.
VSPN CE Course: Open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians/support staff.
This course has been RACE approved for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists and is approved by the VHMA for CVPM credits (RACE # 22-19103, VHMA #11-05).
Course Information:
Staff handbooks are valuable for outlining hospital policies regarding employees. They are also effective for clarifying expectations management has of employees. Staff handbooks can be used as a guide for management when making decisions regarding employee issues that arise.

Week 1 (Real Time Session January 11):
Why Do I Need a Staff Handbook?

Required Reading:(prior to January 11): AAHA Guide to Creating an Employee Handbook , �Getting Started� pages ix-xii, and pages 1 � 38
Objectives: Upon completion of this session participants should be able to
- Name the reasons for creating a handbook
- Discuss some of the legal aspects of staff handbooks
- Outline goals for their own handbook
Week 2 (Real Time Session January 18):
What Should I Include in the Staff Handbook?

Required Reading:(prior to January 18): AAHA Guide to Creating an Employee Handbook, pages 39 - 78
Objectives: Upon completion of this session participants should be able to
- State pertinent content of a staff handbook
- Discuss what is included in current staff handbooks.
- Summarize what to include and know suggested policies
Week 3 (Real Time Session January 26):
How Do I Write a Custom Staff Handbook?
Presenter: Heather Howell, LVT, RVT, MBA
Required Reading:(prior to January 25): AAHA Guide to Creating an Employee Handbook, pages 79 - 130
Objectives: Upon completion of this session participants should be able to
- Identify available resources for staff handbooks
- Write your own staff handbook.
- Recognize the importance of involving your team in the creation and review of the handbook
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.
*The lecture portion of this course will utilize both text and audio presentation, please be prepared to listen.

About the Presenter:
Heather Howell is a credentialed veterinary technician in CA and NV. She received her BS in Animal Science at UC Davis and her MBA at the University of Nevada, Reno. Since 1988, she has worked in all capacities of the veterinary hospital including hospital administrator, practice management consultant, speaker, and instructor. She is also an adjunct professor the Veterinary Technology Bachelor�s program at Tarleton State University.

- Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to
VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course
must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a
VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
