Course Information:
Thrive or survive? Many of us to work in the ER because we thrive in the high-pressure environment created by multiple traumas, dyspneic or septic patients. With multiple, time-critical patients we need low to moderate stress to aid optimal performance, but overwhelming stress reduces cognitive function, leading us to survive rather than thrive. Sound familiar?

How can you tip yourself, or your team, back to thriving and why is it important?

By maximizing your cognitive bandwidth to make appropriate clinical decisions, to communicate effectively and be adaptable you increase patient safety, you develop stronger client relationships, and you improve your own wellbeing.

This course will give you the tools to recognize when and why your cognitive bandwidth decreases, how to recognize it in others and how to support individuals and teams to widen it again.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • understand common emotional, physiological and cognitive responses when we feel our ER shifts hit "crisis."
  • appreciate how crisis responses can impact communication, patient safety, and staff well-being.
  • recognize the importance of a shift pre-brief especially when there is a high percentage of relief staff.
  • understand what tools are available to support you and your team when the shift becomes overwhelming.
  • understand the role of leadership and flattened hierarchies in the ER.
  • appreciate how we use working memory in the ER.
  • recognize different types of decision making and when we use them.
  • understand what can be detrimental to short term memory and the impact on decision making – "civility saves lives."
  • learn about cognitive aids to maximize cognitive band width and why this is important in decision making.
  • appreciate the importance of reflective learning when our decisions lead to unexpected outcomes.

Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinary teams interested in learning to manage their decision making in an ER setting to help their team and practice thrive.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 4 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists. (RACE 20-1217848)

Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session September 4, 2024): Embrace Your Humanity – How Knowing Yourself and Your Team Improves Patient Safety and Staff Wellbeing
In this session we will talk about the importance of checking in with yourself and your team at the beginning of a shift (pre-brief), what happens when we feel emotionally or cognitively threatened and provides tools to reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed. We will delve into how pressure compromises communication and how understanding your team’s physiological and emotional needs while on shift helps to maximize memory, attention, decision making and executive function. We will discuss leadership and flattened hierarchies before lastly considering the hot debrief at the end of a shift, providing peer-to-peer support and learning opportunities.

Week 2 (Real Time Session September 11, 2024): Decisions, Decisions, It’s Never Black or White: How Gray Can Hurt My Brain
ER patients can have complex needs requiring time-critical decision making. It is important to understand how our individual needs and team dynamics can affect decision making, why and when we might move between slow and fast thinking and how we can optimize our decision-making processes using cognitive aids.
In this session we will consider how our brains hold information, what will reduce our decision-making capacity and what will support it. We will discuss "civility saves lives" to highlight how communication can impact decision making and how cognitive aids can maximize cognitive bandwidth available for decisions.
Finally, we will consider the approach to reflection, when it appears our decisions have led to an unexpected outcome. We will build on the hot debrief from the previous webinar to consider reflective learning tools for future ER shifts.

Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. To learn more about the requirements for earning a CE certificate, please refer to Receiving Your CE Credit and Course Completion Certificate.
