Clinical Evaluation of Prostatic Diseases in Dogs at the Dr. Daniel Cabello Veterinary Hospital

Summary: Historical, physical sings and protocol associated with prostatic disease diagnosed in dogs over 5 years of age during five months (March-July 2003). In a group of 40 (100%) dogs, 20 cases (50%) were incorporate to the protocol and 8 dogs were determined to have specific prostatic disease.

The protocol of the work was composed of the physical evaluation, ultrasonographically the prostatic parenchyma, cytologic and histologic evaluation could be obtained by transurethral catheter biopsy, needle aspiration (transabdominal), surgical biopsy and necropsy.

The result of the physical evaluation were: prostatic disease was 9,5 years significant differences were not observed between ages of the others studies. In variety breed 62,5 %.

The clinical signs observed were: prostate enlargement (100%), pain prostatic (50%); abdominal location (12,5%), prostate irregularity (12,5%), ultrasonographic measurements of canine prostate dimension was between 2,8 cm to 11,7 cm (5,8 cm) with normal size. Prostatic evaluation for cytologic and histopathologic were: adenocarcinoma, benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostatitis, prostatic cyst and prostatic abscesses.

This study was comprising of all the male dogs older than five years coming to the Dr. Daniel Cabello Veterinary Hospital . The selection of criterion were: Physical evaluation, ultrasound values and morphology study (cytologic e histopathology). To get cytological samples was used technical biopsial, needle aspiration (transabdominal, surgical biopsy and necropsy. The analysis on cases on frequency median.

Go on selection criterion only twenty males dogs were examined as a result only eight dog diagnosis were found according to the diagnosis with prostatic diseases.

Ultrasound finding: reveled measure between 2,8 cm to 11,7 cm with (median 5,8 cm) in big breed dog the prostate was bigger.

Cytologic and histopathologic diagnosis were: 50 % adenocarcinomas, 12,5 % Bening Prostatic Hyperplasia, 12,5 % Prostatitis, 12,5 % Prostatic Cyst and 12,5 % Prostatic Abscesses.

In conclusion, this disease is a common problem in older sexually intact male dogs. The best age to do protocol diagnosis is five year old.

A specific diagnosis is essential for proper therapy and prognosis, therefore, the diagnosis is determined on prostate examination its ultrasound measurement considerant reading tables to indicate the real size of it.
