Introduction
The report of conjunctival cyst in animals is rare. Only a few reports of conjunctival cyst and its surgical treatment were published in dogs. No conjunctival cyst in cats has been reported. This is first report of conjunctival cyst and the successful treatment in a cat.
Objectives
To report conjunctival cyst in a cat.
Methods
A 9-month-old female domestic short hair cat presented with a mass at the conjunctiva of the third eyelid of the right eye for three months. Fine needle aspiration was performed by the previous clinic. The mass contained the clear fluid. The cat was referred to Ophthalmology Clinic, Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Kasetsart University after the fluid was released and the mass reformed again shortly afterward. Complete ophthalmic examination was performed and surgical removal was planned after histopathologic interpretation.
Results
Ophthalmic examination revealed the pale-pink, smooth, oval mass at the third eyelid adhered to the lower palpebral conjunctiva. Total cyst removal was performed. Histopathologic result revealed enlarged and dilated glands lined by simple cuboidal to low squamous cells and some serous cells. Diagnosis was conjunctival cyst. The cat opened the eye comfortably after surgery. No recurrence of the cyst has been observed in eight months follow up.
Conclusions
This is the first report of conjunctival cyst in a cat. Treatment was successful by total removal of the cyst.
