Remote Communities Without Veterinary Access...North America Is Not Immune
World Small Animal Veterinary Association World Congress Proceedings, 2014
Rod Jouppi, BA, DVM

This presentation will consist of a PowerPoint capturing pictures of various communities along the James Bay area of the far north in Ontario, Canada. This discussion will center on the issues of overpopulation of dogs in these communities and welfare aspects that can be involved with this. Attempts to control populations without veterinary input usually results in inhumane approaches on the part of community leaders. These approaches will be discussed as well as the need for veterinary input as well as the need for leadership and communication needed to institute programs. When there are no roads available to remote communities, this represents significant issues with respect to communication, travel, transport as well as proper awareness in the community with education, buy-in from band councils and the community leaders.

This presentation will follow through with the needs of the communities, the steps involved in carrying out such remote clinics, why veterinarians need to show leadership in veterinary medicine for animals without owners or owners who cannot afford proper care and the results that can be expected from sustainable clinics that can be held at least annually.
