It was demonstrated through Schirmer Tears Test (STT), in the Peruvian hairless dog a trend of positive cases of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS). The purpose of this study was to quantify the Tear Film Break Up Time (TFBUT) in this breed that were diagnosed by STT suspects, positive and negative at KCS. The study took place in Lima city and 125 Peruvian hairless dogs (250 eyes) were assessed, with no other detectable disease to clinical examination and no history of illness. By STT animals were classified as positive, negative and suspicious KCS. Then they placed a drop of fluorescein in each eye and noted the color of the film pre corneal lachrymal (FPL), to quantify the time of the rupture. TFBUT average was determined for each group and difference between them was determined by the respective statistical tests. The results obtained for STT were: 45 (18%) eyes with epiphora (> 31 mm); 183 (73.2%) normal eyes (15-30 mm); 7 (2.8%) suspected eyes (10-14 mm) and 15 (6%) positive eyes (0-9 mm) to KCS. The average of STT for the group in dogs with epiphora was 33.49mm; the average for normal dogs was 23.65mm, the average for the group of suspects was 10.87mm, the average for the positive group was 6.3mm. To TFBUT were: 4 (1.6%) normal eyes (> 15 sec.), 233 (93.2%) suspects eyes (5-14 sec.) and 13 (5.2%) eyes positive (0-4 sec.). The average for TFBUT in the normal group of dogs was 15.75 sec.; the average for the group of suspected dogs was 8.4 sec.; the average for the positive group of dogs was 3.3 sec. The average value for the rights eyes was 7.38 sec. and its standard deviation 2.38 seconds, so the average range for the right eye to TFBUT was set at 5-9.76 seconds. The average value for the left eye was 7.96 sec. and its standard deviation 2.53 sec. so the average range for the left eye to TFBUT was set at 5.43-10.49 sec. The overall average for the 250 eyes was 7.67 sec. and its standard deviation 2.47 sec., determining an average TFBUT range of 5.2-10.14 sec.
