Veterinary Clinical Department, School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, State University of São Paulo UNESP, Botucatu, Brazil
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has become a disease of high incidence in cats. The aim of this study was to evaluate the epidemiological data in domestic cats from Botucatu city, São Paulo (SP) state, Brazil. The medical records of the cats treated between 2008 and 2015 were evaluated. Data such as gender, breed, age, and systolic blood pressure were analyzed. Fifty-six cats with clinical signs consistent with CKD and confirmed through laboratory and imaging tests (abdominal ultrasound) were included in this study. The CKD staging was performed according to the International Renal Interest Society (IRIS 2009) in CKD I, II, III, or IV stage. Four cats (7.1%) were staged in CKD I, 50% males and 50% females. Seventy-five percent was mixed breed and 25% Persian cats. The average age was 11.5±5.5. Eleven cats (19.6%) were classified in CKD II, 36.4% male and 63.6% females. The average age was 14.6±3.6, and 81.8% were mixed breed and 18.2% Siamese cats. CKD stage III was observed in 11 cats (19.6%), 27.3% males and 72.7% females. The average age was 12.8±3.9, and 72.7% from mixed breed, 18.2% Persian, and 9.1% Siamese cats. CKD stage IV was the most prevalent, occurring in 30 cats (53.6%). The average age was 14.1±4.5, and 83.3% were mixed breed and 6.6% Persian and 10% Siamese cats. Most cats with CKD are elderly, regardless of the disease stage. The evaluation of renal function in these patients should be encouraged.
