Objectives

To practice basic interpretation principles using selected diseases of the brain. The session is intended to reinforce the principles discussed during a previous hour of formal lecture.

A collection of nine cases are presented below. However, it is highly unlikely to cover more than six cases in a one-hour discussion. MRI findings and conclusions will be discussed with active audience participation.

For all cases, list your MRI findings and most likely diagnosis.

Case S121434

Fifteen-year-old domestic longhair cat. Weight loss, weak pelvic limbs, and circling.

Case S102368

Ten-year-old Shih Tzu, intact female. Focal seizures of acute presentation.

Case S135621

Ten-year-old, castrated male, domestic shorthair cat. Leaning to the right, decreased vision and equilibrium. No pupillary reflex in the right eye, menace reflex decreased. Decreased level of alertness.

Case 153051

Six-year-old Golden retriever, intact male. Pelvic limb weakness, muscle atrophy, proprioceptive deficits causing phalangeal wounds. Decreased pain sensation in the hind limbs.

Case 143040

Seven-year-old Golden retriever. Spayed female. Circling to the left, proprioceptive deficits on the right side. Personality has changed in the past 4 months.

Case 167739

Eleven-year-old Springer spaniel. Spayed female. Severe generalized seizures. Lethargy, ataxia in all four legs, proprioceptive deficits in the pelvic limbs.

Case 151945

Fourteen-year-old Maine coon cat. Castrated male. Weight loss, lost palpebral reflex after maxillary molar surgical extraction. Change in behavior, cranial nerve deficits 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th, and 8th. Clinician would like to assess right eye, as ocular complication from surgery is suspected. Oblique views of the globe are included.

Case 144396

Eight-year-old Siamese cat, spayed female. Ataxia and incoordination. Mentally "inappropriate."
