Fishes offer a greater range of diversity in structure and function than do any other vertebrates and are thus ideal for a wide variety of experimental investigations in the field and laboratory. Their specific adaptations to various habitats are reflected in all of their organ systems and are superimposed upon their particular phylogenetic morphology. Several features of the organ systems of fishes will be discussed and illustrated.
