In this preliminary study we investigated a synthetic prostaglandin analog for induction of both abortion and parturition. The purpose of the present report is to evaluate the effect of cloprostenol in pregnant queens with unavailable medical histories.
In order to determine the abortifacient effect of cloprostenol, 3 queens were given daily dosages of 2.25 µg of d-cloprostenol (Dalmazin®, Vetas, Istanbul, Turkey) / kg of body weight, subcutaneously until abortion was completed. Cloprostenol was also applied for evaluation of effectiveness on the induction of parturition in 2 queens using the same dosage and means.
Termination of pregnancy was successful in 2 of the 3 queens treated with cloprostenol. Two queens were aborted 2 and 5 days after the first treatment, whereas treatment failed in the 3rd queen. The parturitions were started 45 minutes and 2 hours after the administrations and completed in 45 minutes and 6 hours respectively. Most common side effects included an increase of pulmonary rate, restlessness, abdominal pain, and vocalization.
In conclusion, cloprostenol alone may provide benefits in the termination of feline pregnancy.
