Objectives

Some chemical and herbal drugs are used to prevention and treatment of these lesions. These chemical drugs have some side effects and many of people prefer using the herbal drugs. The present study was carried out to observe the effects of Ranitidine, Licorice root and Chamomile flower in the treatment of gastric lesions induced by Diclofenac.

Materials & Methods

20 healthy male dogs were included in this study. Dogs were judged to be in good health condition by clinical and Para clinical examinations. The animals were treated against endo and ecto parasites and then randomly divided into 4 groups. Endoscopic examination was done on each dog prior to trial. All of the animals in each group received 150 mg Diclofenac for 2 weeks. After beginning clinical and endoscopical documents of gastric ulcer, each group received medication as follow.

Group 1. Diclofenac, Group 2. Diclofenac and 150 mg Ranitidine q12h, Group 3. Diclofenac and 200 ml Licorice root q12h and group 4. Diclofenac and 200 ml Chamomile flower q12h. The herbal drugs administrated on their catalogs.

Endoscopic examination was performed on each dog of each group every two days.

Results

Group 3 had lesser mean gastric lesion scores compared to other groups. There were no significant difference between group 4 and group 1 (control). Gastric lesions of group 3 were less numerous and the size and depth of these lesions were less severe than other groups.

Conclusion

Evaluation of between Licorice root and Ranitidine revealed that use of Licorice root had faster effect to cure the ulcers in comparison to Ranitidine in this study.
