Robert Stevens, DVM; Tom Hopkins

An adult bottlenose dolphin (Tursiop-S truncatus) presented with bilateral swelling along the peduncle. Osteomyelitis was diagnosed in the lateral peduncle near the leading edge of the fluke. An etiology was never determined, however trauma was suspect. Diagnostic procedures included radiography, and a C.A.T. scan performed at a local hospital. The case was managed conservatively and included attempts to stabilize the affected area with splints and a specially designed cast. Diagnostic protocols, case management and outcome will be discussed.
