At the California Marine Mammal Center tranquilization of northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) is used to facilitate force feeding and the performance of various veterinary procedures.
Chemical restraint is frequently used in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus), harbor seals (Phoca vitulina), and northern elephant seals for minor surgical and special diagnostic procedures.
Inhalation anesthesia is used routinely for major surgical procedures and extensive diagnostic evaluation.
Drug dosages and anesthesia techniques will be discussed.
