Background

An induction is the crucial stage of general anesthesia which causes cardiovascular changes. Renal perfusion is also influenced by cardiovascular changes such as bradycardia or hypotension. Renal failure may occur after anesthesia especially in patient with marked decrease renal perfusion. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the most sensitive renal perfusion parameter which can be effectively determined by scintigraphic technique.

Aims

To determine and compare the effect of the two different anesthetic methods on the glomerular filtration rate in anesthetized cat by using renal scintigraphy.

Methods

10 adult healthy cats were studied by using crossover design with 1 month interval. Cats were divided into 2 groups of Xylazine/ Tiletamine/ Zolazepam and Isoflurane inductions. Renal scintigraphy was performed for determine GFR by using 99mTc-DTPA (Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid) as a radiopharmaceutical. The GFR from both inductions were statistical analyzed by means of a Paired t-test which significance was set at p < 0.05.

Results

All cats were modest induced and recovered from both inductions. The mean GFR ± standard deviation of Xylazine/ Tiletamine/ Zolazepam and Isoflurane groups were 1.16 ± 0.31 and 0.89 ± 0.36 respectively. There was no significant difference of the GFR between two different induction methods.

Conclusion

Although several factors influence GFR, both injection and inhalation anesthesia show the same GFR changes in early stage of anesthesia in healthy cat.
