Introduction

The third eyelid gland prolapse is a common ocular pathology in dogs and rare in cats. The elected treatment is surgical and different surgical options exist, but removal of this gland is never recommended. This new technique uses an anchorage at the orbital ventral periosteum with polypropylene 3-0 or 4-0.

Objectives

To evaluate a different technique performed in 75 dogs and 1 cat with third eyelid gland prolapse in 2011 to 2016.

Methods

Retrospective study from 2011 to 2015 with dogs in which third eyelid gland prolapse was corrected.

Results

In the study were included 75 dogs and 90 eyes, 56% males and 44% females. Affected breeds: English bulldog 45% (34 dogs), Beagle 14.6% (11 dogs), Cocker 10.4% (8 dogs), French bulldog 5.3% (4 dogs), and other breeds 20% (15 dogs). Ninety eyes were operated with the technique, 45 right eyes and 45 left eyes. Only 5 eyes required reoperation for recidivism corresponding at 5.5%, generally associated with a suture breaking before surgery in big dogs.

Conclusions

New periosteum anchorage results in a valid technique for the third eyelid gland prolapse in dogs with a minimum recurrence and complications.
