Surgical management of a traumatic dislocation of the sternum in an English bulldog
Free Full Text

The sternum was reduced and stabilised with a contoured 12-hole 3.5-mm dynamic compression plate applied to the ventral surface of the sternum. The dog's initial recovery was rapid, cardiorespiratory parameters returning to normal in the first 24 hours. For 2 weeks postoperatively the dog exhibited difficulty in rising from a prone position. After this time there was a full recovery.

Reliability and agreement in the use of four- and six-point ordinal scales for the assessment of erythema in digital images of canine skin
Although both scales demonstrated high reliability, the four-point scale was superior in terms of agreement. For the assessment of erythema in clinical trials, a four-point ordinal scale is recommended.

Feeding obese dogs during weight loss is on average cost-neutral
The median food cost before weight loss was £0.52/day (£0.24 - 3.31/day), for main meal only, and £0.64/day (£0.26 - 3.31/day) for main meal and additional food (table scraps and treats). The median food cost during weight loss was £0.90/day (£0.26 - 1.36/day), and no additional food was given. The average daily feeding costs during weight loss did not differ from pre-weight-loss costs, either with or without the additional food included.

Abnormal Limb Bones In A Kitten
I don't know what this is, but it is the worst case of it I have ever seen.

Explaining To Clients Why Not Treating Asymptomatic Bacteruria In Dogs Is The Correct Thing To Do
For bacterial cystitis, drug and time depends on the bug. For E. coli, 3 days of high dose fluoroquinalone should suffice if the bug is sensitive. It's generally 4-6 days for pyelo.

Why Milk Is Recommended For Treating Ingestion Of Caustic Materials
If the ingested caustic material is alkaline, where the tissue damage may take a number of hours to develop, I like a liquid or near-liquid that contains some protein -- I feel that it can provide a substrate to which the ingested alkaline agent can bind, helping to spare the gut mucosa.

FDA Warning: Do Not Use Compounded Drugs Stored in Becton-Dickinson (BD) Syringes
Preliminary information indicates that drugs stored in these syringes may lose potency over a period of time due to a possible interaction with the rubber stopper in the syringe.

Cases That Make You Feel Like A Hero
I saw a recheck appointment for a dog I diagnosed with Addison's disease 2 weeks ago. The owners are so thrilled with how he is doing. This was a second opinion, previously tentatively diagnosed as IVDD and treated with gaba and tramadol and Rimadyl. The dog has lost 20% of its body weight and is eating like crazy and gaining weight.

Cases like this make all the other crap more tolerable. :)

What are your hero cases?
