Study of Mirtazapine Use in Cats
Jessica Quimby, DVM, DACVIM of Colorado State University needs your help. This study compares the appetite stimulating and anti-nausea properties of mirtazapine to placebo.

This study can be performed at your clinic. The investigators are offering a $200 incentive for each cat completing the study and will reimburse $36 for each of the three exams required by the study. The chemistry panels will be performed at CSU at no cost. The costs of T4 analysis and urine culture will also be covered. The owner receives 6 months of cat food and 2 months of compounded mirtazapine after the conclusion of the study.

Check the clinical trials page to see if any of the ongoing trials might make new or novel therapies available for your patients.

If you would like to add your clinical trial or research project, please complete this survey or contact mrishniw@vin.com.

Each VIN page has a Log Out button near the top right. Logging out will also keep you and your colleagues from accidentally impersonating each other.

Did you know that colleagues working in the same practice qualify for group membership rates? If more than one member of your practice is using a single VIN login, you and your colleagues should each have your own login and be billed as a group membership.

This helpful FAQ will explain how group memberships work. If you still have questions contact membership services at vingram@vin.com, or call membership services at 1-800-700-4636 (toll free) or 1-530-756-4881 (local).

A novel method of core aspirate cytology compared to fine-needle aspiration for diagnosing canine osteosarcoma
Core aspirate cytology using a bone marrow biopsy needle allowed for penetration of cortical bone and aspirate cytology with a larger bore needle than fine needle aspiration; however, there was no significant difference in diagnostic accuracy between techniques.

BAER testing in a dog with bilateral external ear canal atresia
This case is an example of the use of bone-conducted BAER testing to aid in the diagnosis of conductive deafness, and in determining prognosis for normal hearing after surgical treatment of external ear canal atresia.

Amlodipine-induced gingival hyperplasia in a Great Dane
Amlodipine was replaced with hydralazine. Nine months later, gingival hyperplasia was nearly resolved and hypertension was well controlled. Calcium channel blockers such as amlodipine are a rare cause of gingival hyperplasia in the canine patient.

Fixation recommendations for a mandible fracture in a dog following tooth extraction of a resorbed tooth
Extracting a healthy mandibular first molar is difficult at best with a fine dance between too much torque and preparation (removal of the coronal buccal alveolus, elevation of the hemisected roots, etc.) The ankylosis adds to the difficulty. Sharpened wing tipped elevators, illumination and magnification, suction and minimal torque are all keys to successful extraction.

Genu recurvatum in a toy breed puppy
The quadriceps tie down will certainly do it. Premature closure of the tibial tubercle seems like it would do it, but a few of the cases I have seen with this disorder did not tend to cause "recuratum." I think that if the quadriceps muscle is healthy, it has time to lengthen. Trauma to the quadriceps muscle with fibrosis is a possible cause. Remember, all of these cases are in young, growing animals.

VCA has purchased Brightheart and Vetstreet; are there data security implications?
I'm not saying this event unto itself is bad or good. But at some point, does this lead us down the whirlpool the pharmacists are on and have passed the point where private ownership / Pharm'D (DVM) controlled / will be a rarity or a thing of the past and most Pharm'D's (DVMs) are working for a big corporation?

    Recurring bad dreams
My version of the dream usually involves a class I missed in high school. I have to go back to complete the class before someone realizes I should never have gotten into college, much less vet school. It's usually gym class, but sometimes it's a math class I never attended and now I have to pass the final exam. Generally at some point in the dream I get frustrated with trying to pretend I'm a high school student and I end up announcing to everyone that I am a DOCTOR for crying out loud and the gym teacher can take her soccer ball and stuff it someplace inappropriate.
