Video Procedures Manual
VIN Mentor is a growing collection of medical procedure videos with narration, step-by-step instructions, and needed materials lists. The goal is to provide all the information you need to help you perform the procedures with confidence.

Each procedure page has a PDF you can print for ready reference as you perform the procedure.

Currently, Mentor contains mostly procedures commonly performed in the ER. Procedures from many disciplines (including exotic species) are planned future additons.

To suggest a procedure for inclusion, or contribute your own videos, please email Mentor@vin.com.

Cruciate Repair Strategies Survey

VIN Consultant, Felix Duerr, DVM, ACVS, ECVS, AVSMR, needs your help evaluating different approaches to cranial cruciate injury and repair in dogs.

This VIN-hosted survey should take less than 10 minutes to complete and, as always, the answers will be confidential.

Whether you perform cruciate repairs, have referred cases for cruciate repairs, or even advised friends or family about their pets with cruciate injury, your survey response is valuable.

If you have any questions about the content of the survey, please email Felix (Felix.Duerr@colostate.edu).

If you have technical issues with the survey, please email Mark Rishniw (mark@vin.com).

Prospective echocardiographic and tissue Doppler screening of a large Sphynx cat population: Reference ranges, heart disease prevalence and genetic aspects
Body weight should be taken into account when interpreting values of diastolic myocardial wall thicknesses in Sphynx cats. Additionally, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and mitral valve dysplasia are two relatively common heart diseases in this feline breed. More pedigree data are required to confirm the inheritance pattern of HCM at the breed level.

Case clusters of leproid granulomas in foxhounds in New Zealand and Australia
This report details the first occurrence of multiple cases of canine leproid granuloma (CLG) occurring in in-contact dogs and the first proven case of CLG in dogs in New Zealand.

Follow-up study comparing necropsy rates and discrepancies between clinical and pathologic diagnoses at a veterinary teaching hospital: 2009 versus 1989 and 1999
There was a marked improvement in the ante-mortem diagnosis of patients in 2009 compared with both 1989 and 1999 as evidenced by the decrease in the proportion of discrepancies between the clinical and pathological diagnoses. Necropsies should still be regarded as a vital tool for teaching, determining the pathological basis of disease, identification of new and emerging diseases, and for an individual animal determining the cause of death.

Differentiating A Systolic Heart Murmur From A Continuous Murmur
How many continuous heart murmurs have you heard before? What is the heart rate? It's pretty common for a systolic murmur to be mistaken for a continuous murmur if the heart rate is fast.

Human Internist Euthanized His Dog With Insulin Overdose
I am bothered both by the fact that he did the euthanasia and the method in which he did it.

Removing Ticks With Hands or Fingers - Risk?
The danger is that fingers are not as fine as tweezers and therefore you'll squeeze the body of the tick and its gut contents into the wound it is attached to. You'll inject the person with any infectious agents doing this. That said, I found a tick on my daughter's scalp a couple of years back and panicked and used my fingers.

Mummified Ectopic Fetus Found And Removed During Ovariohysterectomy
Thanks for sharing the great photos of a mummified ectopic fetus! Although these do seem to be more common anecdotally in queens, there are some threads on them in bitches here in VIN.

      Best UNPLANNED practical joke?
About 10 pm one evening, I was picking up some blood reports as a new resident walked up and stood near me in the alcove of the hallway. I was, at that moment, trying to recover from one of my coughing fits. Finally, I managed to stop. After drawing a ragged breath, I muttered softly, "Damn tuberculosis."

His eyes looked like dinner plates as he backpedaled rapidly into the opposite wall, then took off at just short of a jog. I was trying to tell him it was a joke, but I was already winded from the cough, and was laughing so hard I could hardly make a sound!

Associate can remind you of the diseases to consider for a variety of cases. You can get there through the VINDEX drop down menu at the bottom of most VIN pages or using Ctrl + E on your keyboard from anywhere on VIN.

The Book section of Associate lets you read the chapter on a particular disease. The Tool section helps you analyze your cases, clinical sign by clinical sign.

The VINDEX contains links to the most used and useful (or hard to find) VIN features.

The VINDEX is located on the upper right side of the Front Page, just below the navigation bar and is a handy tool to help you find many of the most popular VIN features. But if you really want to see the magic, from any page on VIN hold down your Ctrl button and push the “E” on your keyboard (Ctrl+E). So the next time you are looking for the VIN Bookstore or the calculator you used a few weeks ago, use the VINDEX.
