The Many Dangers of Lilies and
Smooshy Faces

Lilies are beautiful flowers, but do they kill cats? Join Michele Gaspar, DVM, DAVBP for Cats and Lilies this Sunday at 8 p.m. and learn about their toxicity.

Smooshed faces may be cute but they aren't exactly built for function. Come back at 10 p.m. and join Brendan McKiernan, DVM, DACVIM, for The Seven Sins Of Brachycephalics.

Use the Rounds link in the Main Navigation bar to join the discussion. To find out what other interesting rounds topics are coming soon, see This Week's Rounds Schedule.

If you can't attend, be sure to check the Rounds or Front Page of VIN or next Tuesday's VIN This Week for links to the transcript of the discussion.

Chocolate Toxicity Calculator
The holiday season may be over but many owners still like to indulge their pets by giving them special treats. It's well known that although chocolate is good for us, it can be dangerous for your patients. If you're not sure how much is too much, let the Chocolate Toxicity Calculator help you plan your treatment strategy.

The Chocolate Toxicity Calculator is available on Beta.vin.com and www.vin.com. Give it a try; your feedback is greatly appreciated! Email feedback@vin.com to let us know what you think and how it can be even better.

If you like the Chocolate Toxicity Calculator, you'll love the VIN suite of calculators. The MyCalculations suite allows you to save data for your patients, so that you can compare, print and share results from different visits. MyCalculations is available on Beta.vin.com and www.vin.com and can be found in the VIN Library and the VINDEX (Calc./Conversions).

QuickSearch added to BETA.VIN.COM
Start a search from the Front Page and most other pages on VIN!
Now you can type in your search terms and search all VIN resources or narrow your search to journal abstracts, message boards, drug resources, conference proceedings, clinical resources and client handouts from most any page you are currently viewing on Beta!

We promise that everything we ask you to test on http://Beta.vin.com has gone through rigorous testing -- and will not cause you to experience the headaches that can come with early versions of software.

Beyond being the first to enjoy new features that will enhance your VIN experience -- your feedback and suggestions will help the VIN Wizards put the final touches on new VIN features and speed moving them to https://www.vin.com .

And as always, please let us know if you find any problems using either https://www.vin.com or http://Beta.vin.com.

Effects of weight loss on heart rate normalization and increase in spontaneous activity in moderately exercised overweight dogs
Coupling a weight loss program with daily standardized activity helped dogs recover an ideal body condition characterized by a better body composition with maintenance of lean tissues at the expense of fat. Blood parameters improved, while heart rate also normalized.

Actinomyces in chronic granulomatous disease: an emerging and unanticipated pathogen
Actinomycosis is a chronic granulomatous condition that commonly manifests as cervicofacial, pulmonary, or abdominal disease, caused by slowly progressive infection with oral and gastrointestinal commensal Actinomyces species. Treatment of actinomycosis is usually simple in immunocompetent individuals, requiring long-term, high-dose intravenous penicillin, but is more complicated in those with Chronic Granulomatous Diseases because of delayed diagnosis and an increased risk of chronic invasive or debilitating disease.

Treating acute colitis
This article discusses a logical approach to treatment and the therapeutic options available to equine clinicians. The prevention and treatment of complicating sequelae, such as laminitis and endotoxemia, are discussed and must be considered in the patient’s prognosis.

Merial's Frontline letter
I just got a letter from Merial stating that they value and trust their relationship with the veterianary profession and that is why Frontline products will never go OTC. I thought that Costco was OTC. At least Bayer has the balls to say what they are doing. Don't pee on me and tell me it's raining out.

Vet bashing: another article about bad vets
Those are both frustrating articles! I would imagine the reason that the vet clinic "refused" to give the puppy back could have been the yet unpaid vet bill... Haha. But of course the public rallied around the poor victims of the Veterinary Evil League of Evil and helped out the family.

Kittens with severe chemosis are not responding to therapy: now what?
These photos are compatible with a multi-agent infection. Usually persistence and consistent therapy is needed to resolve these cases -- and it can take several weeks.

Video cameras in the office: friend or foe?
The practice owners are well within their rights to use such devices. I know of instances where the cameras have resulted in the arrest of burglars in the clinic, as well as provided evidence when a staff member was found to have lied about doing something.

Kids say the darndest things
Once a kid of about six years old was in the room while I vaccinated her dog, and she didn't want to watch. When I was done I told her that her dog had been very brave, and I was sure she had been brave when she had her last shots too. She looked at me, waved her hand dismissively and said, "Nope. It was CRY, CRY, CRY."
