Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course, we request you attend a practice session prior to the first RTS. Times and dates will be listed in your course confirmation email. Expect to spend up to 1 hour at one of the 2-4 practice sessions held prior to the first RTS.
Level and Prerequisites: All members of the veterinary support staff may join the course and its discussions; however, this intermediate level course places an emphasis on the anatomy and physiology of the different systems and how nutrition can help manage the specific disease process. An understanding of anatomy and physiology is highly recommended. VSPN CE Course. This course has been submitted for RACE approval for veterinary technicians.
Course Description:
Advancements in veterinary nutrition continue to occur and the main goal is how do we do this in conjunction with disease? Nutrition is more than just a source of nutrients. These nutrients of concern or Key Nutritional Factors (KNF) are examined for specific food characteristics that have relevance to specific disease treatment or prevention goals. Veterinary support staff can provide essential input to clients in explaining how the recommended therapeutic nutrition will help to modify a patient's response to a disease. This is also relevant in implementing support, and providing extended follow up care with the patients. This course will provide the tools to accomplish a nutritional recommendation for a specific disease process, provide client education, as well as patient support.
The course will be presented in three (3) 90 minute real time interactive live sessions and will include online handouts, quizzes, case studies, and message board discussion interaction with both the instructor and other course participants. Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of course-exam is required to be considered for the certificate of completion. The course is geared toward all members of the veterinary support staff; however this course does place an emphasis on anatomy and physiology of the patients and applies nutrition to help manage specific diseases. Participants should already have a strong grasp of basic nutrition and disease processes to fully understand the effect that therapeutic nutrition will provide.

About the Instructor: Mary Mould is a veterinary technician educator and has taught small animal nutrition for five years. Her experience in small animal practice as well as instructing in veterinary technology distance programs has provided solid experience in understanding the advancements of nutrition in managing disease in patients.
Course Outline:
Week 1 (Real Time Session June 8): Why use Therapeutic Nutrition?
Content: Recognizing the physiology of a specific disease and how therapeutic nutrition can manage and elicit a positive response to the disease. We will go through various diseases an animal may have starting with therapeutic nutrition in obesity management and mobility problems. Included will be a discussion on the Key Nutritional Factors (KNF) important in managing weight loss and mobility problems in dogs and cats. Calculating a diet recommendation will be discussed and case studies will be given to practice your skills in recommending and calculating a feeding plan for weight loss in both dogs and cats.
Week 2 (Real Time Session June 15): Therapeutic Nutrition in managing Gastrointestinal, Diabetes, Liver, Renal and Lower Urinary Tract Disease (LUTD) diseases.
Content: We will look at each individual disease, discussing the physiology of the disease, and how therapeutic nutrition can help to manage and create a response to the disease. There will be case studies in recommending the best nutrition according to the key nutritional factors for each specific disease.
Week 3 (Real Time Session June 22): Therapeutic Nutrition in managing Adverse reactions, Brain aging, Cardiovascular, Recovery and Neoplasia disease.
Content: We will look at each individual disease, discussing the physiology of the disease, and how therapeutic nutrition can help to manage and create a response to the disease. There will be case studies in recommending the best nutrition according to the key nutritional factors for each specific disease.
CE HOURS: 4.5
Tuition: $90 ($81 early bird special if enrolled by May 18, 2011).

** To ensure participants are ready and prepared for classes, enrollment will close when the maximum number of participants is reached or at 5pm ET the day of the first Real Time Session unless otherwise noted. If the first Real Time Session is on a weekend, course will close on the Friday before the first Real Time Session.
