TECH153-0508: Equine Laboratory Diagnostics

INSTRUCTOR:
Shelley Shopsowitz-Durand, RVT, BA

DATES:
May 7-June 13, 2008
Real Time Sessions: Tuesday evenings, May 13, 20, 27, and June 3, 2008; 9:00pm-10:30pm ET (USA)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Diagnostic tests are often recommended for horses. Complete blood counts, biochemical tests, and urinalysis can give important information with regards to a horse's health status. Lumps and bumps can occur - some serious, others may be nothing to worry about - cytology samples can give important diagnostic information. Various infections require testing in order to isolate specific organisms so that the veterinarian will be able to prescribe appropriate treatment regimens. This course will help familiarize those interested in equine veterinary medicine with the various tests and equipment available for equine diagnostics and their significance to the practice of equine medicine.

The course will be presented in four (4) 90 minute real time interactive live sessions and will include online handouts, quizzes, and message boards discussion interaction with both the instructor and other course participants. Ms. Shopsowitz-Durand has taught several courses online for VSPN CE and adds this essential component for all veterinary staff in proper collection, sample handling, and diagnostic testing specific to an equine practice.

Upon completion of this course, the participants should be able to

The significance of finding various cells, crystals, etc. in urine will be considered.

Week 4: Cytology and microbiology
In this final week, we will discuss fine needle aspirates and skin biopsies and look at examples of microscopic findings. Examples of specific conditions in horses will be considered. We will look at how bacteria are identified under the microscope and will also discuss how bacterial cultures and sensitivities are performed and what diagnostic information can be provided for the veterinarian.
