COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Participants will learn bandages commonly used in avian medicine and appropriate situations and techniques to apply said bandages. Additionally, participants will be taught about various wound types seen in birds and common treatment options. This course will utilize photographs and videos of actual cases.
Drew Bickford is the current Senior Certified Veterinary Technician at the University of Minnesota's Raptor Center. A long time career with significant emphasis in avian medicine has made Mr. Bickford an ideal teacher for nursing care of all members of this species. He teaches all levels of staff and veterinary students as well as participates in research and fundamental studies of avian medicine.
This course is open to all veterinary support staff currently working with avians, but is geared toward the veterinary technician looking to expand knowledge and expertise in avian nursing care and in avian medicine.
Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to
Week 1: Bandaging
Content: We will discuss specific cases, techniques, materials, and show videos of how appropriate bandages would be applied to that patient. Participants should familiarize themselves with the library handout material before the session.
Week 2: Wound Management
Content: Through the use of case studies, we will evaluate wounds through photos and discuss appropriate wound care options. Participants should familiarize themselves with the library handout material before the session.
LIBRARY MATERIALS: Library materials will be made available prior to the topic week so participants will have plenty of time to prepare for the real time sessions and discussion.
MESSAGE BOARD DISCUSSIONS: Message board discussions regarding the topic presented will begin on the day the course opens and continue for one week following the last real time session. These discussions will be held in the VSPN CE course area.

$60 ($57 early bird special if registered before June 2, 2010).
