COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Participants will cover the importance of gathering patient information and recognizing its relevance to anesthesia. Participants will learn about anesthetic drugs, their classifications, physiological affects, advantages and disadvantages.
Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
Recognize issues that could predispose a patient to problems during anesthesia:
Avoiding complications and addressing them if they occur.
Understand the characteristics of the different drug classes:
Indications, contraindications and applications.
This course is open to all veterinary support staff but is geared towards the veterinary technician performing anesthesia.
COURSE OUTLINE:
Week 1: Chapter 1: Preanesthetic Physical Examination and Evaluation:
Content: This session will cover the importance of signalment, history, physical exam, lab work and diagnostic testing. We will discuss consideration of each of these and how they may affect the anesthetic protocol to be used.
Week 2: Chapter 2: Preanesthetic Agents:
Content: This session will cover the reasons for using premedications, the classes of drugs used as premedications, their pharmacology and affect on physiology. We will also cover routes of administration, duration of action and appropriate doses.
Week 3: Chapter 3: Anesthetic Agents: Section 1: Injectable General Anesthetics:
Content: In this session we will discuss the injectables used for induction and maintenance of anesthesia, their advantages, disadvantages, indications, contraindications and uses.
Week 4: Chapter 3: Anesthetic Agents: Section 2: Inhalant General Anesthetics:
Content: This session will cover the physiology and pharmacology of the inhalant anesthesia, MAC values and how other drugs may affect MAC values. We will also discuss the importance of waste gas management.

Other course materials will be in the form of handouts and slideshows/web tours. There will also be a list of sources where the materials were retrieved to help create this course.
CE HOURS: 6 (RACE applied for)
LIBRARY MATERIALS:
Library materials will be made available prior to the topic week so participants will have plenty of time to prepare for the real time sessions and discussion.
MESSAGE BOARD DISCUSSIONS:
Message board discussions regarding the topic presented will begin on the day the course opens and continue for one week following the last real time session. These discussions will be held in the VSPN CE course area.
