COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Module 3 focuses on diagnostic imaging, anesthesia, elective surgery, and emergencies. This session will provide a basic understanding of anesthesia and elective surgery essential for veterinary assistants to help veterinarians and veterinary technicians with preparation, nursing care, monitoring, and recovery of surgical patients. This session will also discuss associated terminology and considerations for clients. A basic understanding of emergency care and triage will also be covered. All members of the veterinary support staff may join the course and its discussions; however, this course has a basic content and is focused toward novice veterinary assistants, animal caretakers, and new hospital employees in companion animal practices. Exotics and large animal medicine will not be covered comprehensively.
Heather Howell, LVT, RVT, MBA has taught numerous classes online for VSPN and has developed this series of courses to teach veterinary assistants, animal caretakers, and new employees the basic elements of the companion animal hospital and enable them to actively contribute to quality patient care. Module 3 has three (3) ninety (90) minute online interactive real time sessions covering discussion of situations; homework reinforcing the handouts and real time sessions; interactive message boards to discuss the real time sessions and homework; and a final exam. The course will also utilize interactive cases to test the participant's knowledge of the material discussed in each session.

COURSE OUTLINE:
Week 1: Diagnostic Imaging (radiology, ultrasonography, endoscopy)
Content: This session will cover diagnostic imaging options available including radiology, ultrasonography, and endoscopy. The basics and terminology related to each of these imaging options will be covered. The session will also cover handling issues relating to these procedures. Personal safety precautions will also be reiterated (from module 1) for radiology.
Week 2: Basic Concepts in Anesthesia
Content: This session will cover the basics of anesthesia including parts of the anesthetic machine. Monitoring the patient during induction, maintenance and recovery will be discussed. The session will also cover the basics pharmacology of different types of anesthesia available. Stages and planes of anesthesia will also be discussed.
Week 3: Basic Concepts in Anesthesia, Elective Surgery and Emergency Care
Content: This session will continue to discuss the basic concepts of anesthesia and will move on to discuss the basics of surgery prep, surgical suite etiquette and gowning/gloving. Instrument identification, care and disinfection/sterilization will also be discussed. We will also discuss the basic principles of triaging a potential emergency and setting up for emergency care. Monitoring the critical patient and gathering necessary emergency supplies will also be covered.
LIBRARY MATERIALS: Library materials will be made available prior to the topic week so participants will have plenty of time to prepare for the real time sessions and discussion.
MESSAGE BOARD DISCUSSIONS: Message board discussions regarding the topic presented will begin on the day the course opens and continue for one week following the last real time session. These discussions will be held in the VSPN CE course area.
