COURSE DESCRIPTION

This one-session course will focus on urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence (USMI) in female dogs non-responsive or incompletely responsive to phenylpropanolamine, as well as USMI male dogs and in cats. Other causes of incontinence will be discussed as well, but chiefly as differentials or complicating factors for USMI.

Topics to be covered:

• Basic neurophysiology of normal micturition, and the neurophysiological premises behind available pharmacotherapies
• Physical and diagnostic examination of the refractory USMI patient
• Identification and troubleshooting of possible anatomical and medical complicating factors of USMI
• Management of USMI in cats and male dogs
• Understanding potential alternative and combination pharmacotherapy for USMI
• Exposure to available endourologic and surgical techniques for management

Course objective:
Participants will feel comfortable with the diagnostic evaluation and management of USMI in cats and dogs seen in general practice. They will further understand advanced and referral alternatives available for more difficult cases and which patients may benefit from them.
