Level and Prerequisites:
This
intermediate course will be open to veterinarians
actively interested in in-house drug compounding.
Prior to starting this course veterinarians should have experience
using and prescribing compounded products for their patients.

Course Information:
Week 1 of this five week course will provide an overview of compounding
for veterinarians including legal considerations and pros/cons of compounded
products. Weeks 2-4 will provide video demonstrations of compounding and walk
participants through the steps from start to finish of preparing a compound
for a patient. Capsule, liquid, transdermal, and otic medications will be covered.
Week 1 (Real Time Session March 28, 2017):
Introduction to Compounding Concepts
Presenter: Lauren Eichstadt Forsythe, PharmD, FSVHP
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- evaluate proposed compounds for appropriateness including stability,
bioavailability, safety and efficacy.
- describe the general compounding steps that should be applied regardless of formulation.
- explain relevant US laws for veterinary compounding.
- identify appropriate references for evaluating compounds.
Week 2 (Real Time Session April 4, 2017):
Oral Liquids - Suspensions and Solutions

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- describe the properties of suspensions and solutions.
- explain when a liquid compound would be appropriate and the pros/cons of this option.
- work through the general compounding steps from Session 1 to prepare a suspension and a solution.
Week 3 (Real Time Session April 11, 2017):
Capsules

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- describe the properties of capsules.
- explain when compounded capsules would be appropriate and the pros/cons of this option.
- work through the general compounding steps from Session 1 to prepare capsules.
Week 4 (Real Time Session April 18, 2017):
Transdermals, Otics, and Other Drug Dosage Forms

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- describe the properties of transdermals.
- explain when a transdermal compound would be appropriate and the pros/cons of this option.
- work through the general compounding steps from RTS 1 to prepare a transdermal.
- describe the properties of otic medications.
- explain when an otic compound would be appropriate and the pros/cons of this option.
- work through the general compounding steps from RTS 1 to prepare an otic medication.
Week 5 (Real Time Session April 25, 2017):
Incorporating drug compounding into your business
Presenter: Lauren Eichstadt Forsythe, PharmD, FSVHP
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- make an informed decision regarding when to make a drug and when to out-source it.
- explain the legal requirements and list the necessary forms.
- understand how to make in-house drug compounding profitable.
- educate others on how drug compounding is done.
- put together a compounding drug information library.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Course Materials: Course materials will be available
in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.
Required Textbook(s): There is no required textbook for this course.
About the Presenter:
Lauren Eichstadt graduated from the University of Findlay,
College of Pharmacy in May 2015. Following completion of her PharmD degree,
Dr. Eichstadt completed a one year veterinary pharmacy residency at Purdue
University's Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH). As part of this residency,
Dr. Eichstadt taught compounding to pharmacy students through a hands-on course,
taught didactic CE to veterinarians on compounding, and spent a large portion
of her time compounding medications necessary for treating patients of the VTH.
She also is involved with research surrounding compounded products and has
written home study CE courses for veterinarians and pharmacists on compounding.

- Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to
VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course
must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a
VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
