COURSE DESCRIPTION

Physical rehabilitation has recently gained acceptance as a useful therapy to improve postoperative outcomes and enhance function in animals with disabilities. This course will give a general overview of assessment and treatment of a dog with an orthopedic dysfunction and present ways to begin incorporating rehabilitation into your practice, with minimal investment.

This 2-week course is open to all veterinarians and technicians with an interest in rehabilitation.

Upon completion of this course, the participant should:

  1. Know how to perform a history and physical assessment of an animal that has an orthopedic problem requiring rehabilitation.
  2. Understand how to make a therapeutic plan for rehabilitation
  3. Be familiar with some of the basic techniques and modalities used in rehabilitation.
  4. Understand some of the indications for the various rehabilitative therapies.
Course Outline:

Week 1 (November 5):
Assessment of an animal for rehabilitation

  1. Review the potential benefits of rehabilitation
  2. Explain the importance of a thorough history
  3. Describe how to assess body composition, muscle mass, gait, joint function, and pain; using objective measurements when possible.
  4. Create a problem list and goals for designing a rehabilitation plan
Week 2 (November 12):
Application of rehabilitation to clinical problems
  1. Discuss the indications for cold therapy, heat therapy, massage, PROM, and stretching.
  2. Describe various types of therapeutic exercise

COURSE WITHDRAWAL AND REFUND POLICY: Withdrawal prior to the listed start date of a course entitles the registrant to a complete refund or a credit toward a future VIN CE course, whichever is preferred. Withdrawal within 1 week after the listed start date (i.e. including no more than one real-time session) entitles the registrant to a credit toward any future VIN CE course. (Does not apply to courses with only one real-time session.) After the first real-time session, a registrant may withdraw due to special circumstances and receive prorated credit towards a future VIN course. These requests will be handled on an individual basis. The amount of the prorated credit will be determined based on 65% of the time remaining in the course at the time of withdrawal. It is not possible to withdraw retroactively.
