Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course, we request you attend a practice session prior to the first RTS. Times and dates will be listed in the course confirmation email . Expect to spend 30-45 minutes at one of the 2 or 3 sessions prior to the first RTS.
Level and Prerequisites: Participants in this course should be well versed in basic veterinary medicine and happy to extrapolate across species; this course is geared toward anyone with an interest in sugar gliders. This course is open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians.
Course Description:
Sugar gliders are popular pets and client expectations are growing. This course is designed to provide you with knowledge on both medicine and surgery of sugar gliders that will give your clients confidence in your ability to look after their precious pets.
This course consists of four (4) 2 hour Real Time Sessions; library materials supplementing the chapters in the required text; interactive message board discussions; and an end of course quiz designed to enhance course effectiveness and material retention.

About the Instructor: Dr. Geoff Pye is a VIN consultant for the Small Mammal / Exotics Message Boards and a senior veterinarian at San Diego Zoo. He is the author of several publications on sugar gliders and has a keen interest in all marsupials. Dr. David Brust is the founding father of the Association of Sugar Glider Veterinarians and the author of "Sugar Gliders: A complete veterinary guide". His sugar glider patients number in the thousands.
Course Outline:
Week 1: (Real Time Session January 4): Taxonomy, anatomy and husbandry
Required reading: None
Content: Week 1 will cover taxonomy and natural history, and husbandry including housing and diet, anatomy and physiology of sugar gliders.
Week 2: (Real Time Session January 11): Physical exam, sample collection and imaging
Required reading: None
Content: Week 2 will cover physical examination, restraint (both manual and chemical), sample collection (blood, urine, etc.), clinical pathology, and diagnostic imaging.
Week 3: (Real Time Session January 18): Diseases
Required reading: None
Content: Week 3 will cover parasitic, bacterial, fungal, viral and neoplastic diseases.
Week 4: (Real Time Session January 25): Non-infectious diseases, surgery, dentistry and hand-raising
Required reading: None
Content: Week 4 will cover non-infectious diseases, surgery, dentistry, hand-raising young and associated diseases, preventive medicine, and necropsy.
CE HOURS: 8
Tuition: $160 ($144 early bird special if enrolled by December 21, 2010).

Course withdrawal and refund policy: Withdrawal prior to the listed start date of a course entitles the registrant to a complete refund or a credit toward a future VIN CE course, whichever is preferred. Withdrawal within 1 week after the listed start date (i.e. including no more than one real-time session) entitles the registrant to a credit toward any future VIN CE course. (This policy does not apply to courses with only one real-time session.) After the first real-time session, a registrant may withdraw due to special circumstances and receive prorated credit towards a future VIN course. These requests will be handled on an individual basis. The amount of the prorated credit will be determined based on 65% of the time remaining in the course at the time of withdrawal. It is not possible to withdraw retroactively.
