Course Information:
This course offers veterinarians a unique perspective on cytology from both an internist and a clinical pathologist teaching in tandem. This allows for discussion of:
  • how to obtain diagnostic samples.
  • how to interpret cytology in conjunction with history, physical exam, laboratory data, and diagnostic imaging.
  • how to use cytologic information to optimize a treatment plan.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • discuss indications for cytology.
  • understand how to obtain and process samples for in-clinic review or submission to a commercial laboratory.
  • discuss the growing role of point-of-care cytology wherein slides are scanned in-clinic for remote review by a pathologist.
  • identify the strengths and weaknesses of cytology vs. histopathology.
  • have a basic working knowledge of classification of cell populations as inflammatory, hyperplastic, or neoplastic.
  • understand how to predict the histogenesis of neoplasms as epithelial, mesenchymal, or discrete / "round cell."
  • understand how to obtain and process samples for fluid analysis for either in-clinic or commercial laboratory.
  • classify fluid as hemorrhagic, transudate, modifies transudate, chylous, exudate, or neoplastic effusion.
  • interpret results of analysis of a cavitary effusion to help rank the differential diagnosis list for a patient.
  • integrate principles learned during week 1 to help diagnose cases of the liver, spleen, abdominal lymph nodes and bone marrow.
  • integrate principles learned during week 1 to help diagnose cases involving the kidneys, bladder, prostate, and GI tract.

Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in cytology.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 10 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-1235438)
