Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course, we request you attend a practice session prior to the first RTS. Times and dates will be listed in the course confirmation email . Expect to spend 30-45 minutes at one of the 2 or 3 sessions prior to the first RTS.

Level and Prerequisites: Participants in this course should be well versed in the fundamentals for periodontal disease and dental radiology equipment. For that reason, it is recommended that participants have taken Module 1 this course is geared toward the basic/intermediate level practitioner. This course is open to veterinarians.

Course Description:
This course in Veterinary Dental Techniques is designed to allow discussions of current techniques used in veterinary dentistry. Veterinarians practicing all levels of veterinary dentistry are invited to participate, from the veterinarian just interested in getting more information in veterinary dentistry to the Board Certified Veterinary Dentist. The course will pick up where Module 1 left off, Radiographic Interpretation. It will cover extractions and the frustrating feline diseases of Tooth Resorption (aka FORL) and Feline Chronic Gingivostomatitis (FCGS) syndrome.

This course consists of four (4) 2 hour Real Time Sessions; library materials supplementing the chapters in the required text; interactive message board discussions; and an end of course quiz designed to enhance course effectiveness and material retention.

About the Instructors: Dr. Steve Holmstrom was one of the two original VIN Dental Consultants. He has co-authored the textbook which the course is based on, Veterinary Dental Techniques, which is in its 3rd edition and in 4 languages. He has also authored Veterinary Dentistry for the Technician and Office Staff and edited two editions of Veterinary Clinics of North America. He is in a dental only practice in San Carlos, California.

Dr. Dale Kressin is an advocate for companion animals. He has a passion for dentistry, oral surgery and pain management. These areas of the veterinary profession have historically been inadequately addressed, misunderstood and seriously under stressed. Dr. Kressin enjoys collaboration with colleagues on the VIN message boards and in continuing education courses. These interactions are personally and professionally rewarding.

Week 1: (Real Time Session February 28):

Content: Dental radiographic interpretation: periodontics, endodontics, orthodontics, FORLs, oral neoplasia

Week 2: (Real Time Session March 7):
Instructor: Steven Holmstrom, DVM, Dipl. AVDC
Required reading: Veterinary Dental Techniques, p 291-338
Content: Indications for exodontias, instrumentation for exodontias, simple extraction techniques, surgical extraction techniques, multiple root extractions, techniques for specific teeth, exodontic complications.

Week 3: (Real Time Session March 14):
Instructor: Dale Kressin, DVM, FAVD, Dipl. AVDC
Required reading: Veterinary Dental Techniques, p 625-636
Content: Advantages of local dental blocks, local anesthesia agents, areas that can be blocked, techniques.

Week 4: (Real Time Session March 21):
Instructor: Steven Holmstrom, DVM, Dipl. AVDC
Required reading: none
Content: Feline Dentistry: Stomatitis, Tooth Resorption (a.k.a. FORL).

CE CREDITS: 8

Tuition: Member $160 ($144 early bird special if enrolled by February 14, 2011).
Non-Member $253 ($228 early bird special if enrolled by February 14, 2011).

Course withdrawal and refund policy: Withdrawal prior to the listed start date of a course entitles the registrant to a complete refund or a credit toward a future VIN CE course, whichever is preferred. Withdrawal within 1 week after the listed start date (i.e. including no more than one real-time session) entitles the registrant to a credit toward any future VIN CE course. (This policy does not apply to courses with only one real-time session.) After the first real-time session, a registrant may withdraw due to special circumstances and receive prorated credit towards a future VIN course. These requests will be handled on an individual basis. The amount of the prorated credit will be determined based on 65% of the time remaining in the course at the time of withdrawal. It is not possible to withdraw retroactively.
