Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course, we request you attend a practice session prior to the first RTS. Times and dates will be listed in your course confirmation email. Expect to spend up to 1 hour at one of the 2-4 practice sessions held prior to the first RTS.
Level and Prerequisites: Participants in this course are veterinarians and team members who are either eager to learn more about working with cats or are frustrated with and even dread seeing feline patients.
VIN CE course: open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians/VSPN members. This course has been submitted for RACE approval for veterinarians and veterinary staff.
Course Description:
Working well with cats takes more than increasing your medical understanding. This two session course is designed to help make your clinical experiences with cats more pleasant and productive. By rethinking how we interact with this species, by seeing things from their point of view, life becomes easier for them, for you and, for your clients. You will learn what triggers to avoid, as well as practical applications, tips and techniques and guidelines.
This course consists of two (2) 2 hour Real Time Sessions, which will have text, video and audio components; library materials; interactive message board discussions; and an end of course quiz designed to enhance course effectiveness and material retention.

About the Instructor: Margie graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1982. In 1986 she opened Cats Only Veterinary Clinic in Vancouver, Canada practicing there until 2008. She achieved ABVP Board certification in feline practice in 1995 and published several clinical trials whilst in practice. She has written numerous book chapters and is an active international speaker as well as enjoying teaching on-line. She is Co-editor of the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery. Margie has served extensively in the American Association of Feline Practitioners as well other veterinary organizations. Her interests include all things feline, but in particular, analgesia, the peculiarities of the feline digestive system and enabling more positive interactions with cats.
Course Outline:
Week 1: (Real Time Session Monday, November 29): Understanding and learning to speak "cat"
Recommended reading: Crowell-Davis SL, Curtis TM, Knowles RJ. Social organization in the cat: a modern understanding. Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery (2004) 6, 19-28 (See course library).
Content: Understanding what cats are about and how they interact with each other;
Learning to recognize and interpret signals (body language, facial and whisker cues, vocalizations);
(Real Time Session Tuesday, November 30): Improving the clinic experience for your feline patient

Content: Building on the previous session we identify threats and discuss how to reduce or eliminate them in the clinic setting. Many medical and practice tips will be shared including how to:

Course withdrawal and refund policy: Withdrawal prior to the listed start date of a course entitles the registrant to a complete refund or a credit toward a future VIN CE course, whichever is preferred. Withdrawal within 1 week after the listed start date (i.e. including no more than one real-time session) entitles the registrant to a credit toward any future VIN CE course. (This policy does not apply to courses with only one real-time session.) After the first real-time session, a registrant may withdraw due to special circumstances and receive prorated credit towards a future VIN course. These requests will be handled on an individual basis. The amount of the prorated credit will be determined based on 65% of the time remaining in the course at the time of withdrawal. It is not possible to withdraw retroactively.
