COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to allow discussions in the different areas of pet anxieties, fears and phobias, will also include some strategies to help you (and your patients) manage their anxieties. There will be an overview of the behavior issues that arise do to anxiety and the different behavior issues of dogs and cat that experience anxiety. Veterinarians practicing at all levels of the veterinary field are invited to participate.

There will be an overview of the Role of Medication and Environmental Manipulation in Anxiety Disorders.

COURSE OUTLINE:

Week 1 (September 2):
Introduction - fears, phobias and anxieties - what is the difference and is important?
What is Anxiety? What is Fear? When is it a phobia? What are the potential causes? When is it important in behavior cases? It's physiological and associated behavioral manifestations; How to help clients recognize it; possible misunderstandings (with reference to "dominance" and some of the other misinterpretations e.g. spraying to the owner etc); its impact on learning and behavior modication v's training

Week 2 (September 9):
Dogs and Anxiety
Canine Aggression and Anxiety - Are they always linked? Does terminology affect approach and understanding? Managing Aggressive Incidents; Behavior Modification - what does it mean? Strategies to manage anxiety; Behavior at the Veterinary clinic; factors affecting prognosis; Is euthanasia admitting failure?

Week 3 (September 16):
Cats and Anxiety
Are cat's different to dogs? Urine spraying v's urination out of the tray, aggression and cats; OCD's; Behavior at the Veterinary Clinic; Behavior Modification - environmental manipulation and medication.

Week 4 (September 23):
Noise Phobias and Separation Anxiety in Dogs
Presenting signs, crates and how not to misuse them, behavior modification strategies, medication what to use and when to use it.

Overview of the Role of Medication and Environmental Manipulation in Anxiety Disorders.

Discussions will begin on the start date of the course and will continue for 7 days following the last real time session.
