Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course, we request you attend a practice session prior to the first RTS. Times and dates will be listed in your course confirmation email. Expect to spend up to 1 hour at one of the 2-4 practice sessions held prior to the first RTS.

Level and Prerequisites: Participants in this course should have a good understanding of learning theory and neurophysiology.
VIN CE course: open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians/VSPN members. This course has been submitted for RACE approval for veterinarians and/or veterinary technicians

Course Description:
This course will provide an overview of canine aggression that is directed toward people. A good understanding of learning theory and neurophysiology helps in the understanding and treatment of Canine Aggression. This foundation allows a relevant history to be taken. After taking this course, you should be more confident in your ability to assess the prognosis of each case presented to you and to formulate an appropriate treatment strategy.

This course consists of four (4) 1.5 hour Real Time Sessions; library materials; interactive message board discussions; and multiple choice quizzes (at the end of the course) designed to enhance course effectiveness and material retention.

About the Instructor: Debbie currently divides her time between seeing referral cases to her Behaviour Counseling Service and teaching behaviour topics to veterinarians, veterinary nurses, trainers and other groups interested in small animal behaviour. She is President of the Australian Veterinary Behaviour Interest Group and is passionate about promoting the importance of behavioural medicine to the veterinary profession. Debbie enjoys sharing ideas and experiences on VIN and appreciates the benefits of being part of the supportive VIN community.

Kersti is a registered veterinary specialist in behavioural medicine in Australia, USA and Europe. She works in two referral practices seeing behaviour cases in both Sydney and Melbourne in Australia. She teaches the Distance Education course in Behavioural Medicine for the Centre of Veterinary Education at the University of Sydney, presents education courses all over the world in behavioural medicine, and writes for scientific journals, textbooks, as well as popular magazines. She is a regular presenter in the media and currently is the President of the Australian Companion Animal Council and loves being part of the wider VIN community.

Course Outline:
Week 1: (Real Time Session January 19): Classical and Operant Conditioning
Required reading: None
Content: Learning Theory Classical and Operant Conditioning. The Language of Behaviour Theory and Neurophysiology of Aggression

Week 2: (Real Time Session January 26): Aggression directed toward people
Required reading: None
Content: Categories, Aetiology, History Taking; Client Communication; Euthanasia - When is it Appropriate?; Prognostic Indicators

Weeks 3 & 4: (Real Time Session February 2 & 9): Treatment Strategies
Required reading: None
Content: Overview of Treatment Strategies - Behaviour Modification; Equipment; Medication

CE CREDITS: 6

Tuition: Member $120 ($108 early bird special if enrolled by December 29, 2010).
Non-Member $201 ($181 early bird special if enrolled by December 29, 2010).
** NOTE: To ensure participants are ready and prepared for classes, enrollment will close when the maximum number of participants is reached or at 5pm ET the day of the first Real Time Session unless otherwise noted. If the first Real Time Session is on a weekend, course will close on the Friday before the first Real Time Session.

Course withdrawal and refund policy: Withdrawal prior to the listed start date of a course entitles the registrant to a complete refund or a credit toward a future VIN CE course, whichever is preferred. Withdrawal within 1 week after the listed start date (i.e. including no more than one real-time session) entitles the registrant to a credit toward any future VIN CE course. (This policy does not apply to courses with only one real-time session.) After the first real-time session, a registrant may withdraw due to special circumstances and receive prorated credit towards a future VIN course. These requests will be handled on an individual basis. The amount of the prorated credit will be determined based on 65% of the time remaining in the course at the time of withdrawal. It is not possible to withdraw retroactively.
