Welcome to the 26th Congress of the
World Small Animal Veterinary Association!

The members of the British Columbia Veterinary Medical Association are delighted to welcome delegates to Vancouver for this prestigious veterinary meeting. Together with our national association, the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, we have designed a scientific and social program that we hope will make your trip to British Columbia memorable.

Canada offers wonderful natural splendours. We are known for our friendly populace, eager to share our country with the rest of the world. We are delighted to host you and your family, along with other veterinarians from all over the globe to enjoy a great learning experience in one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

There is something for everyone at the Vancouver World Congress! This unique partnership between three veterinary associations, WSAVA, CVMA and BCVMA, as well as several special interest organizations has resulted in a broad and varied scientific program that includes over 120 speakers and 300 hours of lectures along with original abstract presentations.

As with any project of this size, many people have given generously of their time to make it succeed. It has been a great honour for me to work alongside these people who include the proceedings editor, Dr. Margie Scherk and her editorial assistants, Anita Willis and Laurel Hickey; Organizing Committee members Dr. Moe Milstein, Dr. Alan Hoey, Dr. Brigitte Sonnedrucker, Dr. Hein Meyer and Dr. Francisco Florit; and Scientific Committee members Dr. Judy Rochette, Dr. Margie Scherk, Dr. Shelley Breadner, Dr. Laurence Braun, Dr. Gregg Starrak, Dr. Alan Kuzma, Dr. David Paton and Dr. Nancy Brock.

I would also like to recognize the invaluable support of BCVMA Director of Member Services, Rosemary Bonderud and BCVMA staff member Kathryn Liutec who added this project to their already heavy list of duties. Betty Fata and her team at Venue West Conferencing Services have done a superb and professional job with the logistical details of such a large meeting.

Finally, I would like to thank two great people I have come to know through the WSAVA who have been supportive of our efforts from day one and without whom this Congress would not have happened. Many thanks to Dr. Bill Jackson and especially to Dr. Maggie Gething for her guidance, encouragement and attention to detail.

Organizations like the WSAVA bring us together to learn, not just more science but more about each other. We share many similar challenges; it is invaluable to learn from each other's experiences to turn these challenges into opportunities.

I hope you enjoy Vancouver and I encourage you to make plans now to attend one our conferences next year; the WSAVA in Granada, Spain, the CVMA in Halifax, Nova Scotia or the BCVMA in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Sincerely,

Terry Lake, DVM
Chair, Organizing Committee

Letter from the Editors

When I offered to edit the Congress Proceedings, I knew that it was going to be a bigger project than I anticipated. I was right. This project has been very satisfying from the perspective of having a chance to work with so many interesting and talented people.

Many thanks go to the authors without whom this document would not have been possible. Laurel Hickey and Anita Willis are responsible for the hundreds of hours of creating layout, formatting and final polishing. Dr. Judy Rochette not only edited the entire Dental Congress, but also saved my sanity in the last hours with her rewriting all of the abstracts to develop a linguistically consistent style. Rosemary Bonderud coordinated the flow of the whole project and is responsible for the final printing. Dr. Paul Pion from VIN along with Dr. Frank Buckingham and Dr. Carla Burris have created the CD-ROM. Merial sponsored the entire project! I offer sincere thanks to each of these contributors.

The nature of a World meeting includes the wonderful milieu of many different cultural backgrounds and languages. Judy and I have done our best to honour the intent of the authors papers while editing the English in places. If in any place we have erred, I apologize.

One final note: in a document of this size, there must be something for everyone. For those who look for typographical errors, we are sure you will find a few of those. Enjoy the meeting!

Cheers!

Margie Scherk DVM, D.A.B.V.P. (feline practice)
